Letter, leaf and library all begin with the letter L. Here are some fantastic lesson ideas for children learning about the letter L.

There are many hands-on activities for teaching children about letters. Planning these activities can be made when using these engaging activities for the early years classroom. Here are some ways to teach the letter L:

Letter L Items From Home

There are many items starting with letter L. Here are some ideas for items the students can bring to school from home for the start of the week: lion, lizard, lips, Lego, log, ladybug, lime, lemon, leaf, leg, lunch box and a miniature toy ladder.

Letter L Activities

Class Chart: As a group, discuss all the letter L items brought in to the class and print the words on chart paper. Beside each word, draw a picture beside the word and post on the wall as a reference for the children over the week.

Letter L Lion Activity: Print an uppercase L on a cut out of a lion. Ask student to glue squares on the outline of the letter. Ask student for an example of a letter L word. Print word on the lion.

Lowercase Letter l Ladybug Activity: Print a lowercase l on a cut out of a ladybug on red construction paper. Ask student to glue squares on the outline of the letter and black circles on the ladybug. Ask student to give an example of a word beginning with l.

Enjoy a Laugh Activity: Set time aside during the week for students to tell a knock knock joke to the class if he or she wishes to stand up in front of the class. Just plan for five minutes at the end of the each day or before going out for recess.

Lunch Time Picnic Activity: Tell students to bring in a beach towel and have a lunchtime picnic.

A Dream Lunch: Brainstorm what foods would be wonderful to find in his or her lunch boxes. Chart the answers.

Read a Ladybug Story: Read The Grouchy Ladybug by Eric Carle [HarperCollins, 1996] to the class. Ask the students to express a time when they were grouchy. Have student record in his or her journal a time when he or she was cranky or grouchy.

Leaf Rubbings Activity: Take a leaf and place a sheet of paper over the leaf. Using a crayon colour over the leaf until the shape of the leaf appears on the paper.

Snakes and Ladders Activity: Ask each student who has the game Snakes and Ladders to bring it to school. Review the rules of the game with the class then have groups of four play Snakes and Ladders.

Letter L Songs and Poems: The DTLK website has great songs and poems to teach students about the letter L. These songs are easy to remember and fun to sing along to.

Taste-Testing Letter L Foods: Here are some ideas of food items beginning with the letter L to taste test in the class. Try tasting different types of lettuce: Iceberg, butter, romaine, green leaf or head lettuce. Also try lemon and lime slices, lemon pudding and key lime pie.

There are many fun ways to explore the letters of the alphabet. From taste testing slices of lemon to having a lunch hour picnic are great ways to have fun and learn about the letter L. These activities are easy to plan and are great ways of exploring and learning the letters of the alphabet.
