Kite, kangaroo and key all begin with the same sound. Here are activities to help children learn about words that start with the letter Kk.

The letter of the week is the letter K. Teaching children about the letter K will be easy with these great hands-on letter K activities.

Letter K Items from Home

Remind students on Friday that for Monday is the start of Letter K. Talk about some items the students can look around the house to bring to school on Monday morning. Some ideas can be: a kite, kangaroo, keys, kitten, kettle, ketchup bottle, koala and a king’s crown to name a few.

Letter K Activities

Class Chart: As a group, discuss all the letter K items brought in to the class and print the words on chart paper. Beside each word, draw a picture beside the word and post on the wall as a reference for the children over the week.

Kangaroo Uppercase Letter Activity: Print an uppercase K on a cut out of a kangaroo. Ask student to glue squares on the outline of the letter. Ask student for an example of a letter K word. Print word on the kangaroo.

Kite Lowercase Letter Activity: Print a lowercase k on a cut out of a kite. Ask student to glue squares on the outline of the letter and to give an example of a word beginning with k.

King’s Crown Activity: Each student will make a crown to wear for the day. Take yellow construction paper and cut in half to have two long rectangles. Staple the two pieces together to create one long rectangle. Using scissors either scallop one side of the paper or cut triangle shapes along the top of the paper.

Talk with the children about the many types of gemstones used to create crowns. Make a list of these stones and draw a picture beside each one to show children the shape of colour of each. A teacher can even bring in pictures of crowns to show students what a crown looks like.

Kleenex Activity: Mrs. Jones room website has great songs about colds and germs to familiar nursery rhymes. One such poem from this site sung to Hickory Dickory Dock. This poem can make a great art activity to promote covering a cough and cold.. Write this poem seen below on chart paper and make photocopies of this poem on regular size paper for students.

Cover your mouth if you cough

Cover your mouth if you sneeze

If you cough or

If you sneeze

Cover your mouth if you please!

Then draw an oval for a head and cut out. Cut out rectangles for the neck. Ask each student to trace and cut out two hands. Give students an oval and rectangle to colour a face and glue on a neck. Glue neck and face to the back of the poem.

Glue palms of hand to the back of paper with the fingers curled over to the front of the paper. Glue a Kleenex tissue that has been opened under the fingers of one of the hands. This is a very cute art activity to hang up on a bulletin board to remind children about covering a cough and sneeze.

Make a Kite: Denise Oliveri gives step by step instructions for making kites. Have each student make his or her own kite. Teachers should consider calling in parent volunteers for this activity.

Nursery Rhymes: Teach the class the Three Little Kittens nursery rhyme. Cut out large mittens from construction paper and recite the poem taking turns with students playing the kittens and mother.

Kick a Soccer Ball: Take students outside and make a line. Ask each student to come up to kick the soccer ball. Have someone mark the place where the ball falls. The student who kicked the ball the furthest gets to be the leader of the line for the day.

Taste Test Foods that Begin With K: Here are some foods that begin with the letter K: Ketchup, Kool-Aid, Special K cereal, Kidney beans, kettle corn and kiwi.

Making a Kleenex craft, reciting the poem Three Little Kittens, or tasting kiwis are all great ways of learning about the letter K. These activities do not take much time to plan but really give the students hands-on opportunities to learn all about the letter K.
