Students will be very busy learning about the letter Gg with these fun-filled and educational activities.

This week’s letter is the letter Gg. Printing of the lowercase letter is difficult when young learners want to stay within the lines and the tail of the lowercase letter does not flow under the line. Usually once a printing lesson is taught, this is always corrected with practice.

Teachers may start to notice a need more than one week of letter recognition for certain letters of the alphabet for some students. If this is the case, a teacher may want to review some of the previous activities with the small group of students. If there is an Educational Assistant in the classroom, he or she should work with the small group to reinforce letter recognition and sounds.

Here are some activities for the week of studying the letter Gg.

Letter Gg Items From Home

By this week, a teacher will become aware of those students who are always bringing in items and those who are not. Parents have the most important job of helping make this class activity a success.

Students who have missed bringing in the Letter of the Week’s item should have a note sent home. This letter should remind that parent how the activity is structured. It is important to mention how the objects really are the key to the other activities during the week.

Here are some items that can be brought in to school on the Monday morning: guitar, giraffe, goose, green, leaf, gift, goldfish, goat, grass, gingerbread man, gorilla, groundhog and gloves.

Letter Gg Activities

Class Chart: As a group, discuss all the items brought in to the class and print the words on chart paper. Beside each word, draw a picture beside the word and post on the wall.

Goat Letter Activity: Print an uppercase G on a cut out of a goat. Ask student to glue beans on the outline of the letter. Ask student for an example of a letter G word. Print word on the goat.

Guitar Letter Activity: Print a lowercase g on a cut out of a guitar. Ask student to glue beans or squares on the outline of the letter. Ask student for another example of a letter g word. Print word on the guitar.

Gloves Activity: Bring in a variety of gloves for the students to try on. Some examples are garden, yarn, rubber, leather, and plastic to name a few. Have students sit at tables or on the floor in small groups. Give a pair of gloves to each group. Ask the groups to brainstorm what these gloves would be used for. When the group is done talking, the students can come back to the large group and then the teacher can find out what were the answers when all groups return.

Groundhog Activity: Although Groundhog Day is not until February, singing songs and planning a few Groundhog activities will give students a better understanding when the class revisits groundhogs later in the year. Make a groundhog puppet or learn groundhog songs are both fun ways to reinforce the letter g.

Gingerbread Man Story: Share the story The Keepsake Story: The Gingerbread Man [School Specialty Publishing, 2002] and find out why the gingerbread man did not want to get wet. After reading the story ask the students why they thing the gingerbread man did not want to get wet.

Then take a gingerbread cookie and other items that disintegrate in water such as a sugar cube. Ask children for other examples of what would disintegrate in water and test the idea.

Make a Class Grocery Store: Bring in cans and empty boxes of food. Create a class grocery store. Have a vote on the name of the store. Bring in a cash register and paper or cloth bags to pack the food.

Letter Gg Songs: The website DTLK-Teach.com has many wonderful songs to teach the students about the letter Gg.

Taste-Test Food: Taste-test food items that begin with the letter Gg. Here are some ideas of the types of food: grapes, grape juice, grape jam, graham crackers, grape Jell-O, green salad, gingerbread cookies and gummy bears.

There are many fun-filled activities to help develop a child’s letter Gg recognition. Learning about a groundhog, taste-testing graham crackers or reading a story about the gingerbread man are great ways to have fun while teaching the letter of the week.
