Early Years Activities for the Letter FfPhonological Awareness Ideas for Teaching the Alphabet
French fries, family, four and frog all begin with the letter Ff. Here are some engaging and educational activities to teach young children about the letter Ff.
Children can make and take home some great letter Ff activities at the end of this mini weeklong unit. The suggested activities are easy to plan and students will enjoy participating. Here are some ideas to use in the classroom when teaching about the letter Ff. Letter Ff Items From HomeChildren should bring in items from home beginning with the letter Ff on Monday morning. Some examples of objects can be: plastic or paper fish, a fisherman, frog, fruit, dollhouse furniture, fork, four, fox, feather, five, fire truck, fire hat, fan, flag and flower. These items can be placed on a special table to showcase the items of the week. A special bag with the letter of the week taped on can contain all the items if a table is not available in the classroom. Letter Ff ActivitiesClass Chart: As a group, discuss all the items brought in to the class and print the words on chart paper. Beside each word, draw a picture beside the word and post on the wall. Letter F Frog Activity: Cut out an outline of a frog. Print an uppercase F on the frog and have student cover the F with beans or squares. Ask student for an example of a word from the chart. Print this word on the frog. Fox Activity: Cut out an outline of a fox on brown construction paper. Print a lowercase f on the fox. Ask student to cover the letter with squares or beans. Ask student for another example from the chart and print word on the paper. Paper Fish: Using a cut out of the fish, ask student to glue a variety of ripped tissue paper. Make sure the student glues the tissue paper flat on the paper. Add a googly eye to the fish. Then either using a glitter pen or white glue apply to the tissue paper. Then sprinkle glitter on the tissue paper and allow time to dry. Read a Fish Story: Read as a class, Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister [ North South Books, 1999] This is a wonderful story about a fish who finds happiness when he begins to share. Internet Letter Ff Crafts: There are many websites that have fun Letter Ff activities. From making toilet paper roll Fire Fighters to letter Ff printing pages these activities are easy to incorporate into week. Family Picture: Using pre-cut construction paper or material into skirts, shirts and pants. Glue onto Popsicle sticks then on paper. Cut out circles for faces the child can then draw each family member’s face. Have student tell about his or her family’s favourite supper, a fun holiday spent together or any other story the student would like to share. Books: For the week, the class can enjoy the many adventures from the Franklin book series by Paulette Bourgeois. Some books suggestions include:
Taste-Testing Activity: Ask students what foods begin with the letter F and write answers on chart paper. Try having these foods available for tasting such as: french fries, fruit salad, fruit milk shake or a apple fritter. Please keep in mind any food allergies in the classroom when thinking about this activity. If a student is allergic, then this activiiy should be omitted. Field Trip: A field trip to the local Fire Hall can be planned for the class or have a fire fighter come to the room. Going to a Fire Hall, making a family picture, taste-testing french fries and reading a book about a fish learning to share are all fun activities to learn about the letter Ff. Taking the time to plan out great activities will make the week of learning about the letter Ff exciting for the students. Anselmo, Sandra; Rollins, Pamela; and Schuckman Rita.
