The best board books and easy readers for preschool aged children with first day of school jitters

Whether it is the fear of a new teacher, apprehension about riding the bus, or simply the fear of being separated from a parent, as children return to school this fall, back to school jitters abound.

Sometimes a story relating to new or worrisome experiences can lighten a child’s mood and put things into perspective. Try the following amusing back to school themed picture books to turn that anxiety into excitement:

How Do Dinosaurs Go to School? by Jane Yolen and Mark Teague

Yet another hit by the Yolen and Teague team, this fanciful picture book features giant dinosaurs attempting to fit into the classroom environment. How will the dinosaurs behave? Will they be disruptive and ornery or cooperative, orderly, and caring? Not only is this book perfect for dinosaur lovers, but children ages 3-7 will delight in the humorous illustrations in this amusing demonstration of how to behave in class and on the playground.

The Berenstain Bears Go to School by Stan and Jan Berenstain

The Berenstains do it again in a classic picture book perfect for relieving those first day of school jitters. Sister Bear is worried about starting school, but Mama and Brother Bear show her there is nothing fear, as they prepare Sister for her very first day. This excellent “First Time” book does a brilliant job of showing apprehensive children what to expect on the first day of school. (Ages 4-8)

Wow! School! by Robert Neubecker

Perfect for the hesitant preschooler, Wow! School! is an eye-popping oversized picture book about the thrill of learning. Children can follow Izzy through her fun school day and get a sense of the enjoyable aspects of the school experience. (Ages 3-7).

Back to School by Ellen Weiss

This Fisher Price Little People board book is adorable. Children can tag along with The Little People (Eddie, Maddie, and friends) on their first day of school. Perfect for children 4-8, Back to School walks children through a typical day of school from the bus ride, to the classroom, playground, lunchroom and art class.
