Songs and Crafts for Early Years Classrooms

Sep 1, 2009 Jackie Parsons

Fall themed activities are an essential part of the Early Years classroom in September. Planning an apple theme is easy to do with these great ideas for the classroom.

Themed-based teaching is a wonderful way of teaching concepts in the early years. For the month of September many teachers use apples for a classroom theme. Here are some ideas and suggestions for teachers when using Apples as a theme for the month of September.

Classroom Art

Apple Tree Bulletin Board: Teachers can purchase apple bulletin boarder at the local teacher store and make a classroom bulletin board. Using brown butcher block paper or brown tissue paper, crinkle the paper to make creases. Unfold the paper and staple on the bulletin board, this will be the trunk of the tree. Do the same with the branches with the brown paper and staple onto the trunk of the tree. Using green butcher-block paper cut out the crown of the tree. Add apples children make at the art table during centres.

Apple Prints: Children can make apple prints by using a cut apple dipped in red, yellow or green paint. Then press the apple on the paper to make a print. Children can extend this activity by making a pattern of colours. (Red, yellow, green)

Ripped Paper Apples: Photocopy an apple outline on a piece of paper. Ask the children to rip red, yellow or green piece of construction paper and glue onto paper in the shape of an apple. Add a brown stem and green leaf. Once dry have the child cut out his or her apple.

Apple Storybooks

Read The Little Red House With no Doors or Windows and a Star Inside to the class before making the apple prints. It is a great story for children to listen and discover a star in the middle of an apple.

Another idea is for students to make his or her own apple book. A wonderful apple counting book can be found at the website Virtual Vine

Here are some storybook suggestions:

  • The Apple Pie Tree by Zoe Hall [Scholastics Canada, 1996]
  • Picking Apples by Margaret McNamara [Simon and Schuster Children’s Publisher, 2009]
  • Big Red Apple by Tony Johnston [Scholastics, 1999]
  • Picking Apples and Pumpkins by A. and R. Hutchings [Scholastic, 1994]

Apple Songs

Here are some fun songs to sing with children.

Apples, Apples – sung to "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star"

Apples juicy, apples round;

On the tree or on the ground.

Apples yellow, apples red,

Apple pie and juice and bread!

Apples crunchy, apples sweet;

Apples are so good to eat!

Apple Song: sung to " Itsy Bitsy Spider"

Once a little apple seed was planted in the ground.

Down came the soft rain, falling all around.

Out came the big sun as bright as bright could be

And that little apple seed grew up to be an apple tree!

Teachers can find other great songs written by other teachers at the website Perpetual Preschool.

Other Apple Activities

  • Make apple crisp in the classroom
  • Make applesauce
  • Count how many apple seeds are in one apple.
  • Peel one half of an apple and cut in half. Ask children what they think will happen to each half. Discuss how the skin of the apple protects the apple just like skin.
  • Taste test MacIntosh and Granny Smith apples. Then make a class graph of which apple students like more.

Teaching an apple theme can be great fun in the early years classroom. Students will enjoy learning songs about apples, creating apple prints and taste testing apple crisp. These apple activities will be enjoyed by all in the classroom.
